Old and tanned or young and fair - which is it?

This is a topic that I am really passionate about and I find it hard not to get involved when people say things like "I don't use sun tan lotion" because to me it's utter lunacy! I was shopping in Waitrose recently and I was making conversation with the lady at the checkout about the extortionate price of the sunscreen (hardly encourages people to use it does it?), when she replied 'I don't use it, I tan so I just use moisturiser' so I said 'well you really should use something, it's not good for you' - well that went down like a tonne of bricks! I mean, has she been living in a cave for the past 15 years - does she not know that we all should be using some level of sunscreen? This is the common misconception you see, you think that just because you have dark hair and tan you are somehow invincible, but of course you are not. Aside from the obvious health risks, 5 years of tanning when you're young and care free well surely you'll be paying for if with 40 years of looking like an old shrivelled up prune? Half of these body beautiful types wouldn't need botox or face lifts if they only used a bit of sun block.

If you really must go in the sun then I would recommend a sun block of at least factor 20 for all skin types and also a good tip is to take vitamins A and E because these vitamins can help destroy the free radicals formed from UV exposure.

For me, I prefer to loosely model myself on Liv Tyler! ;-) She proves that fair can be beautiful.

Hi Ya,

I am one of those people who burn...
I don't tan, I go red, then I go back to white, maybe with a few more freckles!

You are quite right, we shoudl ALL be using sunscreen, whether we are burners or tanners, the UV from the sun damages our skin whether we burn badly or not (I have got a lot of telling offs from my aussie other half - they have it instilled in them there!).

And if we are not using sun lotion on our faces, we should be using a moisturing cream or foundation with an SPF!

It really annoys me when people don't use sun cream because they want a tan... don't they realise using suncream means they won't burn and will tan nicer and it won't end up peeling!!!!

I don't like the sun so I'm always the one hding in the shade!!!

I always use suncream!! Even in the winter i use an spf 15 on my face - i don't want to end up with sunspots, extra wrinkles, skin like leather and worst of all skin cancer!! Hooray for beautiful pale girls!! xx

Sorry I'm going to have to disagree, my mother is tanned and has lovely soft skin with very few wrinkles for her 67 years she never moisturized or sunblocked she just used common sense and soap and water, people have been doing it for centuries. There are many more factors that cause wrinkles than the sun, its important to find consider all the details rather than form an opinion based on the pages of woman magazines,as they simplify facts for quick reading.

Hi Zia,

I know what you mean - obviously there will always be some people who are 'immune' to the effects on the sun. People tended to keep themselves covered up because it was fashionable to be pale centuries ago now it's fashionable to be tanned. I get my information from being a biochemist and studying the damage caused by free radicals to DNA not from reading magazines. I certainly wouldn't want to recommend anything to anyone without being reliably informed. Whilst I think perhaps my recommendations might be somewhat general, I always think it best to be over cautious.

Jess was at Guide camp a couple of weeks ago and came back with one of those dirty looking tans. That was with sun cream, I dread to think what she would of been like without.
One of her guide leaders didn't use cream and ended up in first aid with severe burns.
Sun cream all the way for me xx

Here, here! I completely agree with you about using sun cream. I get really angry when I see people on the beach all day with their kid and they are slowly turning lobster pink! They are old enough to make their own decisions but surely they should be teaching their children good habits?

I have to use suncream otherwise I simply burn, as does my dad. My mum on the other hand uses factor 2and goes really brown. She has sunbathed every summer for hours on end for the past forty years or so. She is paying the price now though as she is a wrinkly old prune!! On a more serious note though, she is lucky that she has not got skin cancer. My dad, who does use factor 15, has got skin cancer unfortunately. It isn't too serious a kind, every so often he gets a lump, they cut it out and he is all sorted again, but somehow the karma part of it is not fair! x

I love going on holiday & playing spot the English person..... always over cooked!!! I've never been a sun person as I get sun stroke so stay out of it. I do use cream but I could do better, I forget if I'm just popping out.
I was so angry a few years ago as I had to have a mole removed on my foot then tested, thankfully it was ok but as I'm not a sun worshiper & always covered up I wondered how this could happen :(
