I'm watching Spring Watch, which is a lovely show on BBC 2. I'm sad to see Bill Oddy or 'Body' as we like to call him (Tom Hanks is also affectionately known as 'Thanks' in our household) is not presenting the show this year. I just love watching the birds and seeing he chicks grow. It's just a nice show to watch after a hard day at work (I generally roll in as it starts at 8pm!). Chelsea Flower Show has recently been on as I'm sure most of you know. Here's for the shocking revelation - I must confess to not being all that interested in gardening so I've been nodding and smiling (eyes glazing over) as people mention it. Perhaps I haven't quite reached the age where I get excited over hydrangeas (ooh, I knew the name of a plant other than rose or primrose! :-))? In fact, if anyone lives in Sussex and wants a Hydrangea than let me know because I have one going spare. I just get bored in the garden, I love veggie growing because in my head there's a purpose to it, but I haven't inherited my mum's love of gardening. Perhaps as I get older I'll get the bug? Anyway, we have all these beautiful national trust places near by (Sheffield Park Gardens and Wakehurst Place) and I'm just that fussed either way whether we go or not.
As the name of my blog would suggest, I started this blog to record the progress of my veg growing (and renovating our first house). OH and I have been growing veg for a while now, we were quite the trend setters being by far the youngest (early twenties) allotmenteers in our allotment in Wimbledon. We had a large plot of about 30x15 metres, which was head high in brambles and was cleared to ground level in no time. We had quite a lot of succes and even managed to grow Okra (Ladies fingers) and water melons! It's so much fun when things work!
Now, not a lot of people know this, but in South London there are wild parakeets! We used to see them all the time at the allotment! When they filmed 'The African Queen' back in the 50s, they released 2 thousand of them and they have since thrived! There's an interesting fact for you that you can slip into conversation at a party! ;-)
Now of course we no longer have need for an allotment - I have my secret garden, also known as the 'allotment' out the back of our house. I had a look yesterday and the potatoes, broad beans and onions are coming along nicely. We planted out the sweetcorn yesterday (nothing like home grown sweetcorn!) and I have 3 of my tomato plants (grown from seed, now about 3 foot tall!) in an old Belfast sink. No photos I'm afraid, I can rarely be bothered to take any (so lazy!). So you'll have to make do with a photo of me with three chins (god, I need to lose weight!) from Saturday!

Yes, indeed we see those green parakeets all the time in South London, and when we're not seeing them, we're certainly hearing them!

I didn't know about the parakeets, I hope to impress someone with that story!!
Empty bowl is not good but nice photo. I don't think you need to lose weight, you must be fit if you run loads.
I would like to see some photo's of your veg.... I was planning to set up my new veg patch on wednesday but I've heard it's going to rain all day!! :)
I think the gardening thing does kick in later in life! I remember my grandma being the gardener in our family, and later my mum, and even me, now I'm heading for 40.
I like the parakeet story - I knew they were there in London, but I didn't know why.
I'm losing track of who I've already invited, but I'm having a birthday blog Garden Party - the invitation's on my blog!
I didn't know about the parakeets, Amazing!I think it's brilliant that you grow your own veg,I'm 41 and I havent attempted it yet!

Oh yes I'd heard about these and various other eggsnotic birds in Saaaf London.
I haven't given into a gardening but Mr Thrifty has, we are growing a fair bit and I have to admit that I do get very excited when I eat something he has grown. Is it sad that I find it kind of amazing, even though I grew up on a farm?
Yes I have the parakeets in my south London garden too, although nowhere near as many as last year.I think your right the gardening thing kicks in at some stage if your lucky. It is a great way to keep in shape, I hate the gym I find them places the most boring places in the whole wide world. I have gone off allotmenting a bit too, I still share one but cannot face going there at the moment.
Hey sian, i love flowers, and gardening, but have never had the space to have a veg patch-next year's the year-SO excited! My dad grows allsorts so i think i got the veg bug from him!
Id seen the parakeets on tv before, theyre beautiful, i love little yellow siskins, people dont seem to know of them but theyre quite common. we also have tons of beautifully coloured finches in our garden and a blue tits nest in the side of the house, hope the cats stay away long enough for them to fly away!

Love your fact about the Parakeets! Well worth knowing if I was thinking of moving into South London (Thanks Hen).

Thanks for your advice re the veg plot, I'm going to do pots this year. I've got a raise bed but I cleared in a while ago & dug it over, since then the cats have found it....say no more :( so I don't fancy eating anything from that!!!
I need to clear an area to put pots & get bags of soil to fill them, I'm hoping sunday now. I hope to take some photo's when I'm done :)
Thanks for your comment, We would lose money on our house because we have had to pay out just over £400 for the home info pack that you have to have now before you can put your house up for sale. We are going to hold off getting a survey done on the house and solicitors fees for as long as possible. xx
Ha! I just went to see The African Queen at our little "classics only" cinema. How funny that it's the reason why London has parakeets! Who knew?!
the photo of the green parakeet is great -never seen one before. so enjoy your blog and reading your posts...
